Steelhead/Salmon:

Wilderness Air is such an appropriate name for an airline that navigates this part of the world. It’s a clear day, so your flight to Kimsquit, identified by its gravel runway with several gas cans and a few vehicles laying about, is over the top of the mountains. This is the preferred and shortest route for those who anually migrate to this river. Here you fly among the clouds, mountain peaks caressing your wingtips at all times. Even before you arrive at your final destination you know you are in steelhead country.

In the world of steelhead fly-fishing, this river and its fish are what others are measured by. Entering the river chrome bright, sea lice clinging to their sides, their strength and speed is legendary. It’s a genetic quality required to circumvent waters not navigable by man before reaching their birth place.

The river\\\'s journey spills wide to the channel, rapidly narrowing upriver before being squeezed through tight valleys overshadowed by towering peaks of snow and dense forests of fir. Huge cottonwoods lining the river\\\'s path shimmer in the afternoon breeze, while puzzles of bleached remnants lie piled at every bend. Visually breathtaking!

The first run of the morning is a classic steelhead dry fly run. Before making your first cast, you ponder depth, current speed and steelhead hotels. The small waking, probing “V” from the dry fly has your undivided attention. The first boil startles you, sending a small spray of water behind the fly as the fly continues on its path uninterrupted. Past experience has taught you to wait and gather before casting again. The fish again rises, however this time with less conviction. You change to a smaller fly. Who knows whether it’s the new pattern that alters the outcome or the lapsed time that passes as a result of the act, but this time as often is the fish takes your offering. You lower the rod and wait, allowing the fly to slip into the corner of the steelhead\\\'s jaw. The line gradually tightens. Utter chaos ensues. Even after all these years you are never quite prepared for the initial surge these incredible fish make.

We live for fall\\\'s cooler temperatures. It\\\'s the time of year when steelhead gather to begin their final journey. We load our bags with big rods, all the fleece we own, and rainwear that we know works and, like the fish we pursue, we migrate to the north country. For in the “land of a thousand casts” where a single fish for the week is not uncommon, expect the unexpected. Having the right lines, rods, reels, and clothing appropriate for a variety of conditions will ensure your steelhead fishing is a success. The products we have selected have stood the test of time in pursuing these great game fish.
