Small Streams:The brown that gently recovered in the net filled every inch of the mesh bag. A big green drake cripple hung loosely from the corner of its jaw. From the head your gaze travels to the butter yellow belly and big dark spots that pattern the trout’s deep body. Dipping the front edge of the net to clear its head from the confines of the bag, the big brown gently glides into the streams broken currents. Within seconds all that is left is a memory as the brown quickly disappears from sight. You put the fly up and reel in what excess line remains. Taking a seat to reflect on your good fortune, your gaze travels to the spectacular scenery that surrounds you. The waters here are as clear as any you’ll find in New Zealand. You’d think that spotting fish would be an easy task. Yet upon your initial inspection of the pool where the big brown resided, you missed it. Patience and past mistakes kept you in the shadows before proceeding. As the afternoon progressed, green drakes continued to emerge. Like the big brown they also seem out of place, but you know from experience they’ll be here this. Tucked from sight, you watch the drakes sail into the pool. Over on the far bank one drifts from sunlight into shade and quickly disappears beneath the cool currents. Rings of the aftermath give away the trout’s location. By the sound it made, you know it’s a good fish. Quietly you slip into the clear cool currents and ready your fly. The big fish takes another drake. You cast... Small streams offer the unexpected. At times they will challenge the most skilled of fly-fishers. On other occasions they give up their quarry far more easily, lending balance to their offerings. The equipment we use for these waters we don’t take lightly. We’ve come to learn that rods must be able to cast a variety of fly patterns and, at times, big fish in confined quarters. Given the aridness of our countryside, what we choose to wear is equally as important as the flies we select. We are as familiar with these waters as any in Utah. Our years of experience have helped us hone our skills and equipment to meet the many challenges that Small Streams present.
