Spring Creeks & Tailwaters:Morning light just catches the tip of the Tetons when the first mayfly spinners settle upon the water's mirror like surface. The spring creek’s deceptively calm and clear current carries the day's early hapless offerings down stream to those in wait. Clusters of caddis mill about the tall grasses and willows as they do every morning and evening. Dark shapes, not visible yet very aware of what this all means, lurk inches below the silvery currents eyes focused skyward in anticipation. Like the trout, you wait patiently as you have on hundreds of other mornings. Seated in the tall grasses, the first visible signs of what you’ve been waiting for appear. Again the trout rises and audibly sips leaving a gentle undulating ring. Your heart beats a little faster as you rise and gently wade into position. Again the trout, a good fish, sips another spinner. The game begins. If you’ve ever spent much time on these types of water, you are aware of the many challenges they present.
